Biography Susan Hazard is a fourth-generation Santa Barbara native. Her interest in art began at an early age and has been expressed through multiple mediums, including assemblage sculpture. Susan’s formal education was interspersed through a full-time working career, with classes at Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara Art Institute (defunct), San Francisco Art Institute and a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1990. Susan’s interest in assemblage sculptures began in 1990 and have continued to the present. The main focus of her work is social and cultural commentary, including a strong interest in the feminist movement since the 1970s. Her pieces are mostly recycled, rescued, found and repurposed materials, and utilize various methods of construction. White paint is a pervasive material used in the assemblage pieces, used to obscure the immediate identification of the parts of the assemblage sculpture. Painting the piece allows the whole piece to be seen first; then the disparate parts. The symbolism of the pieces is conveyed through their immediate appearance, but also through the details. Suitcases are symbolic of travel and enclosure. Wedding dresses are highly evocative in their symbolism, expressing unfulfilled hopes, dreams and expectations. Nails and other sharp objects denote pain and sacrifice. Women’s wigs are vanity; wheels are movement and freedom, salt is sadness. A written explanation usually accompanies the assemblage, to further allow the viewer to fully understand the meaning of the sculpture symbolism. Current projects in the process of being finished are table-top shrines and reliquaries utilizing found black and white photographs gleaned from thrift-store disassembled albums and a room installation of wedding dress jellyfish. A handbag wall is also in the planning and accumulation stage. Future projects in the planning stage, including installations of group figures, wall installations, and table shrines.
